Pair Case
A pair case pocket watch is an antique timekeeping design featuring two separate cases—an inner case that houses the timekeeping movement and a removable outer case designed to protect it. Extremely popular from around 1630 until the early 1800s, this dual-layer construction was the historical solution to protecting delicate, expensive timepieces long before dust-proof or shock-resistant watch manufacturing was invented.
The Inner Case: The inner case is the functional core of the watch.
The Movement Chamber: It directly encloses the delicate gear train and the dial. It is typically made of smooth sterling silver, gold, or brass.
Winding Access: Because these early watches were key-wound and key-set, the back of the inner case features open winding arbors (holes).
The Vulnerability: These keyholes made the inner case prone to accumulating pocket lint, dust, and moisture, necessitating an additional layer of protection.
Hinged Bezel: To set the hands, the front glass bezel of the inner case is typically hinged at the 12 o'clock position, allowing it to swing open.
The Outer Case: The outer case serves as a shield and a canvas for artistry.
Protective Shield: It completely encloses the inner case to absorb everyday impacts, scratches, and debris from being carried alongside loose coins or keys.
Opening Mechanism: It features a cutout at the top to allow the inner watch's pendant (the neck and loop) to protrude. The two halves of the outer case are held shut by a catch and are opened by depressing a small external release button.
Ornate Decoration: While the inner case was usually plain, the outer case was often a luxury fashion statement. It frequently featured intricate repoussé (hammered metal relief work), delicate filigree, portrait painting, or horn and tortoiseshell overlays.
The Internal Movement (Verge Fusee): Nearly all authentic pair case pocket watches are driven by a verge fusee movement.
The Fusee Cone: Early mainsprings delivered high power when fully wound and weak power as they unwound. The fusee solved this via a spiral, cone-shaped pulley wrapped in an ultra-fine metal chain. This regulated the torque, delivering uniform power to ensure consistent timekeeping.
